The Daydream Sound aroused the curiosity of his listeners with his 2013 release, Passage to Alkebulan, on which he introduced six original characters on a ritual voyage. With his latest release, The Origin of Silence, he satisfies our curiosity with an album that brings us deeper into the hearts, histories, and memories of the characters we met on the shores of Alkebulan. The Origin of Silence is a compelling album, as both the music and accompanying story allow listeners to explore and experience the mysteries of music and sound.
An Excerpt from Chapter VI of "The Origin of Silence"
Listening for the Beginning
“Hang on, stop yabbering,” Navv said. Atsu and Karwin each clamped a hand over his own mouth. Some giggles escaped in snorts.
“Can you two hear that?” Navv asked.
The twins put down the tools and titanium body parts they had been holding.
“I don’t hear anything,” Atsu said.
“You have to listen with more than your ears. Come, let’s go up on deck and I’ll show you what I mean.”
Curious, the twins followed Navv up to the ship’s bow. “Close your eyes, and listen,” Navv instructed. “Now, what colours do you hear?”
That makes no sense, Karwin thought silently to his brother.
Shh! I’m trying to focus, Atsu thought back. Karwin sighed loudly and closed his eyes.
Seeing that the boys needed help focusing, Navv reached into his cloak and brought out his compass. He mentally directed the glowing orb so it hung in the air just above their two heads. Soon, the boys’ minds settled down, and they both relaxed into listening.
“When you see the sounds, follow them,” Navv instructed.
Atsu could hear the gentle lapping of the waves against the side of the ship. He heard the annoying cries of a gull. He heard the wind tripping through the trees. Wait, what trees? Atsu turned towards the sound. There it was again, a rhythmic pulse, almost like someone’s — or some thing’s — quick breathing. The sound skipped along, making a path that sounded pale yellow, then muddy orange, then burnished copper. Instinctively, Atsu outstretched his arm and reached, walking in the direction of the glowing sound. He opened his eyes. He was standing on the starboard side of the deck, looking towards the distant shores of Alkebulan.
“What is it, Navv?” Atsu asked. “What is that sound?”
“It’s her.” He smiled. “It’s Adiama.”
